We’ve got it! The ISO 45001:2018 certification. It’s an international ISO standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OH&S).1 It replaces OHSAS 18001 in 2018, and is designed to be compatible with other management systems.2
Maclean is one of the few leading cleaning service providers in Malaysia with this certification, and achieving it is an important milestone. But what does it mean for our clients? Let’s break down the importance of this certification.
What is ISO 45001:2018?
Think of it as a roadmap to a safer work environment. ISO 45001:2018 provides an effective and comprehensive frame work that helps businesses of all sizes and industries to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses, fostering a work environment that prioritises employee well-being.
Before an organisation is awarded ISO 45001:2018, they have to adhere to a structured 7-level process, encompassing gap analysis, system implementation, documentation, training and awareness, internal audits, certification audit, and finally, certification decision before the certification is granted.
Why is ISO 45001:2018 Important?
Certification could take months to complete. So why do companies do it even though it is not mandatory in Malaysia? It all boils down to this crucial reason – reduce workplace accidents and risks. It also demonstrates a company’s commitment and social responsibility to provide a safe and healthy workplace.
Beyond that, attaining ISO 45001:2018 results in a win-win-win situation for a company, employees, and the clients. Here's how implementing this standard benefit all involved.
1. Better safety, reduced risks: ISO 45001:2018 helps companies identify and minimise or eliminate risks before they become hazards. This leads to a safer work environment, reduced accidents, and improved employee well-being.
2. Ensure compliance and legal conformity: Adopting ISO 45001:2018 ensures that Maclean adheres to the latest OH&S requirements. This helps to prevent shut down, avoid penalties or legal repercussions, and comply with the regulations of the governing body, National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the Ministry of Health.
3. Improve employee well-being: A safe and healthy workplace is the foundation for a high-morale work environment, which results in increased job satisfaction, productivity, and overall well-being. It bodes well from a HR perspective with lower sick leaves and hospitalisation, absenteeism, and turnover.
4. Achieve operational and cost efficiencies: With less disruptions surrounding manpower issues, minimised damage to company property, and compensation claims, this translates to improvements in overall operations efficiency and cost savings in the long run.
5. Build trust and reputation: Certification under ISO 45001:2018 clearly demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to workplace safety and health to all stakeholders, including employees, clients, suppliers, and investors. It also aligns with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, enhancing trust and credibility in the cleaning industry, whilst being viewed as a desirable company to work with.
6. Global recognition: ISO 45001:2018 is internationally recognised. Thus, stakeholders from around the globe will be assured that the organisation adheres to a global standardised approach to safety and health.
